How to Plan a 1-Day Trip to Macau from Hong Kong

07:37

Macau is a very popular destination for Mainland Chinese tourists because of the proximity, it is just like Singapore to Johor (don't forget Macau is actually part of China). It is also rather popular for tourists who visit Hong Kong because getting to Macau is just a ferry away. Something like traveling from Penang to Butterworth in ferry that takes 1 hour.

Here is a suggested 1-day itinerary for you who are planning your visit to Macau.

FERRY TO MACAU

As mentioned above, you will need to board a ferry to come to Macau. So your first destination would be the ferry terminal. There are two places where you can take ferry in Hong Kong to get to Macau:

1) Hong Kong Macau Ferry Terminal
Address: 168-200 Connaught Rd Central, Sheung Wan, Hong Kong

2) Kowloon China Ferry Terminal
Address: 33 Canton Rd, Tsim Sha Tsui, Hong Kong

After deciding which HK ferry terminal you would like to depart from, you may decide which of the 2 ferry terminals in Macau that you would like to arrive at:
  • Outer Harbour Ferry Terminal Macau
  • Taipa Ferry Terminal
A little introduction to you, there will be 2 (again) main ferry companies for you to choose:
Basically they are almost the same, I've tried both before and think that the seat/journey/staff are similar. One major difference is that Turbo Jet's frequency is higher. Not only that, they also provide overnight sailing. Check out the links above to compare the schedule and fare.

It is very important that if you have already booked your accommodation, you should choose the terminal that is nearer to your hotel. For example, if you've booked Wynn Palace (which is located in Taipa), it only make sense if you choose to go to Taipa Ferry Terminal instead of going to Outer Harbour Ferry Terminal Macau which is the other side across the bridge.

A money-saving tip for you when traveling in Macau is to make good use of hotels' FREE shuttle buses. Especially at places like ferry terminals or the airport, you will always be greeted by a car park full of shuttle buses from different hotels (eg: Venetian, Sands, Galaxy, Wynn etc)

If you have already booked one of the big names, then it's going to be pretty straight forward. Just hop onto your hotel's shuttle bus. However, if your hotel does not provide free shuttle buses, you may simply ride the shuttle bus of the hotel that is nearest to where you are staying. Then from there (the hotel that is near yours) only you walk or take a cab.

WHERE TO VISIT (Macau-Taipa-Coloane)

Macau

1) Ruins of St. Paul's 大三巴

Your visit to Macau is not complete if you did not visit here. Ruins of St. Paul's is undoubtedly the most significant tourist spot in Macau. Bear in mind, it is always very crowded with tourists on their selfie sticks striking their best poses with the most iconic landmark.

Bus routes nearby: 3, 3X, 4, 6A, 8A, 18A, 19, 26A, 33, N1A

2) A-Ma Temple (Ma Kok Miu) 妈阁庙

Known as one of the oldest temple in Macau, this is also a popular place to visit. More information here

Opening hours: 7 a.m. - 6 p.m.
Bus routes nearby: 1, 2, 5, 6B, 7, 10, 10A, 11, 18, 21A, 26, 28B, 55, MT4, N3

Taipa

3) Taipa Flea Market (Gun Ya Gai) 官也街

This particular street is often decorated based on the current festival. There are also plenty of stalls selling souvenirs and will settle all your problems from getting the famous Koi Kei Bakery  to postcards and fridge magnets.

Also, a shout out to Heng Kei 兴记冰室 which is also the local favourite serving very local Macau food at reasonable price.

4) Venetian/ Studio City/ Wynn Palace or any hotel of your choice
Parisian
Other than Ruins of St. Paul's, the most significant thing in Macau would be the casinos and hotels that are architecturally impressive. In year 2016, 2 new hotels debuted, namely
  • Wynn Palace
  • Parisian
Another money-saving tip for you is that majority of the casinos provide free bottled mineral water for all guests. So if you're feeling thirsty but don't want to spend on buying water, you know where you can get them for free =)

More money-saving tip for you, hotels like Galaxy and Wynn Palace offer discounts (10%) at their restaurants if you have their member card. Simply sign up at the casino and you may get the card (and most importantly, THE DISCOUNT) on the spot!
